6 Villages in Sijunjung Regency Hit by Flash Floods, 2,819 People Affected
ASARNews, Sijunjung – Flash floods have hit 6 villages in Sijunjung Regency, West Sumatra, following heavy rainfall on Monday (October 11). Dozens of houses were damaged, and 2,819 people have been affected by the disaster.
The Acting Regent of Sijunjung, Maifrizon, has declared a 14-day emergency response status. According to Abdul Muhari, the Head of the Data, Information, and Communication Center for Disaster Management at the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), the flash floods have destroyed 112 homes and submerged 651 others.
“The incident on Monday night did not result in any fatalities,” said Abdul Muhari in a written statement.
ASAR Humanity’s branch in West Sumatra reported that clean water has become a critical need, as local water sources are still unsuitable for use. “The residents’ water source, which is a dug well, is currently unusable because it is still muddy. Clean water is essential for cooking, bathing, and other daily needs. Basic food supplies are also crucial, as residents have not been able to resume normal activities. Their fields and rice paddies have been damaged by the flash floods,” said Minarti, a member of ASAR Humanity’s West Sumatra branch, when contacted.
ASAR Humanity is currently responding to two disasters: the flash floods in West Sumatra and the eruption of Mount Lewotobi in East Flores. Efforts are ongoing to provide aid to affected communities in both locations.
